In March 2025, Turkey's Bayraktar Akinci drone experienced severe setbacks over both Africa and the Middle East, marking the most challenging period for this advanced drone system to date. Within two weeks, at least two Akinci drones were reported downed, which raised significant concerns regarding their operational capabilities and the defense scenarios faced by Turkey. Notably, an Akinci drone crashed in Iraq's Kurdistan region on March 16, while another was allegedly shot down in Algeria after violating its airspace near Tinzaouaten. Mali confirmed one of its Akinci drones crashed during a surveillance mission, further emphasizing the difficult conditions these drones are operating under. Among these incidents, Mali's loss is especially demoralizing as it represented 50 percent of its limited fleet, questioning the effectiveness of the Akinci in combat scenarios.
