In December 2022, Leeds, England initiated a delivery robot service for groceries in several neighborhoods as a result of a partnership between Starship Technologies and Co-op. The autonomous robots, which operate on six wheels, efficiently deliver groceries and are designed to navigate busy streets. As of next month, Uber Eats will expand this service to include takeaway deliveries in areas popular among students such as Headingley, Hyde Park, and Woodhouse. These robots have the capability of completing deliveries within 30 minutes for distances up to two miles, significantly easing congestion caused by short trips. Meanwhile, local authorities, including councils, have noted the effectiveness of these robots in managing urban traffic and serving the community's needs. While there are concerns about safety and potential crime, the robots have proven to be deferential and are equipped with security measures ensuring that food cannot be accessed until arriving at the destination. The spokesperson for Starship highlighted that the machines have already accomplished over nine million deliveries globally and expressed ambitions to expand the use of this technology throughout Europe by 2026. Local councilor Jonathan Pryor praised the initiative, emphasizing the importance of adapting to technological advancements while maintaining job opportunities for residents, stating that embracing change is essential for progress.
