In the United States, a report released by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) detailed how billions of dollars in taxpayer money were disbursed to questionable rental assistance recipients during the final year of former President Joe Biden's administration. The audit revealed that approximately 30,000 deceased individuals were listed among the recipients, along with thousands of potential non-citizens, indicating potential rampant abuse and fraud within the system. These payments, amounting to over $5 billion, raised serious concerns regarding the administration's oversight of rental assistance programs. The audit covered fiscal year 2024, during which HUD distributed around $50 billion in federal rental assistance to various entities including public housing authorities and landlords. A significant portion of the funds—$5.8 billion—was found to have gone to about 200,000 recipients who appeared to be ineligible. Specifically, the report highlighted that out of those flagged, 29,715 were deceased, while 9,472 were identified as non-citizens. Furthermore, a concerning 165,393 tenants reportedly received assistance that exceeded the allowed limits for their geographical areas, with major concentrations of these payments occurring in states like New York and California. In response to the findings, HUD Secretary Scott Turner described the situation as a massive abuse of taxpayer dollars, emphasizing that the issues were exacerbated by a lack of robust financial controls implemented by the Biden administration. He noted that the directive to disperse funds quickly, with minimal oversight, led to billions in potential improper payments. The report also pointed to the reliance on non-federal entities to accurately assess tenant eligibility, which contributed to potential fraud. HUD officials stated that they are actively investigating the results and are prepared to take appropriate action to hold responsible parties accountable. This includes potentially pausing or revoking funding and making criminal referrals when warranted. As the investigation unfolds, HUD is also looking to strengthen its program integrity measures to ensure that taxpayer-funded assistance is effectively aiding the communities that need it most, as originally intended.
