Story

In May 2026, the Dutch startup Intelic introduced a new project called Intelic BASE, aimed at enhancing the efficiency of drone acquisition for defense departments across Europe. This initiative is a response to the longstanding fragmentation within European defense procurement processes, which have hindered the rapid deployment and transparency of military assets. By offering a centralized marketplace for drones, Intelic BASE aspires to streamline the selection process for defense ministries, akin to the Ukrainian Brave1 Market model. The platform currently features manufacturers from ten countries, including major European players like France, Germany, and Ukraine, allowing for a diverse array of options in UAV technology. The CEO of Intelic, Maurits Korthals Altes, emphasized that Europe possesses significant industrial capabilities in the production of unmanned aerial vehicles. The platform is set up to provide defense departments with technical specifications and pricing information, enabling military decision-makers to find the most suitable drone solutions more effectively. Ukraine's presence in the Intelic BASE is notable, with TAF Industries and other European partners showcasing a range of drone types, such as reconnaissance, strike, and anti-aircraft systems. This initiative is significant as it occurs during a time when Ukraine has been recognized as an emerging “drone superpower.” Following successful collaborations with American and European firms, Ukrainian manufacturers have gained international significance beyond merely serving as a testing ground for Western arms. The Intelic BASE project exemplifies how the European defense community is beginning to unify its approach towards drone technology acquisition while acknowledging the capabilities established by countries like Ukraine. Although Intelic asserts that its platform is the first comprehensive marketplace for drones in Europe, there had been earlier discussions in France regarding a similar venture. However, those efforts appear focused solely on the French military’s needs, unlike Intelic BASE, which aims to accommodate a wider European audience. Furthermore, the innovation prompted by this platform could lead to faster implementation and use of advanced drone technologies among allied nations. The establishment of such a procurement marketplace marks an evolution in Europe's approach to military technology, highlighting a trend towards greater collaboration and shared resources within defense systems.
