India has made recent adjustments regarding business visas for Chinese citizens in an effort to strengthen its relationship with China. Earlier in July 2025, India resumed issuing tourist visas to Chinese citizens for the first time in five years. This resumption followed a period of increased scrutiny regarding visa applications due to a border clash between the two nations in June 2020, which had significantly strained diplomatic relations. Prior to these changes, many Chinese companies, especially in the technology sector, faced difficulties in obtaining necessary visas for their employees, leading to substantial production losses in India’s electronics sector, estimated at around $15 billion over the past four years. As part of these efforts, the Indian government has eliminated an administrative scrutiny layer in the visa application process. This reform allows for business visas to be processed within four weeks, a significant reduction in approval time that reflects India's commitment to nurturing its economic ties with China, particularly as both nations aim to boost trade and investment. The announcement coincides with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China for the first time since 2018, which occurred soon after the resumption of tourist visas. During the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, Modi expressed optimism about the relationship between the two countries, indicating a positive direction with peace and stability on their shared borders. In addition, the renewal of direct flights between India and China, which resumed in October 2025 after a five-year suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic, reinforces the increasing connectivity between the nations. This move is seen as vital for facilitating both tourism and business exchanges. Furthermore, both governments have acknowledged that as part of the Global South, their partnership is crucial in addressing global economic challenges.
