In light of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has affected global fuel prices, EasyJet's management has addressed customer concerns regarding summer flight operations. EasyJet's chief, Kenton Jarvis, emphasized that the airline's fuel supply remains stable across all its airports in the UK and Europe, despite the rising fuel costs due to the geopolitical situation. Additionally, he stated that customers should book their flights confidently and not panic over fuel shortages, as EasyJet remains in close communication with fuel suppliers and other stakeholders. Jarvis reported a noticeable trend among travelers, indicating that many are booking flights closer to their departure dates, likely influenced by uncertainty stemming from the Iran war. This shift in consumer behavior has resulted in a shorter booking window, similar to what other airlines, such as Jet2 and Tui, have observed. Tui highlighted a decrease in summer holiday bookings, with UK customers showing a 10% decline in revenue. Conversely, EasyJet has sustained a strong demand for flights scheduled within the same month, including for various destinations. Despite the challenges posed by escalating fuel prices, which have surged from $831 to over $1,800 a tonne since earlier this year, EasyJet has hedged a significant portion of its fuel supply. Approximately 72% of its fuel supply for the summer months is secured at prices preceding the Iran conflict. This strategic measure aims to mitigate the financial impact of fluctuating fuel costs and uphold operational efficiency throughout the upcoming summer season. Even with a cautious approach to future projections, EasyJet continues to affirm its commitment to maintaining the summer flight schedule without imposing fuel surcharges on fares.
