Story

In December 2023, during his tenure as co-offensive coordinator at the University of Michigan, Sherrone Moore had an inappropriate relationship with Paige Shiver, who was his subordinate and initially an intern. This relationship, which spanned several years, led to Shiver becoming pregnant, but medical professionals advised her against continuing the pregnancy due to a serious health condition known as Pompe disease. Shiver later made the decision to terminate the pregnancy. Despite the personal turmoil, Shiver reported her relationship with Moore to the university on December 10, escalating concerns about his control over her life and career. Following an internal investigation prompted by an anonymous tip, the University of Michigan took action against Moore, which ultimately led to his firing for violating workplace policies regarding personal relationships. Shiver expressed that the environment surrounding their relationship was well-known within the athletics community, suggesting that university officials chose to prioritize athletic success over her safety and well-being. In April 2024, Moore was sentenced to 18 months of probation after pleading no contest to charges related to his behavior. In a subsequent interview with "Good Morning America," Shiver described the control Moore held over her and voiced her belief that he should have faced harsher penalties for his actions. Although she initially had feelings of affection for Moore, she now recognizes the toxicity of their relationship. The university issued a statement asserting its commitment to creating a professional and respectful workplace and acknowledged that they failed to intervene sooner to protect Shiver. Shiver’s attorneys criticized the university's handling of the situation, emphasizing that it was an open secret that Moore exploited his position of power over Shiver. They demanded accountability from university leaders, calling for a thorough examination of the policies governing relationships within the athletic department. This situation brings to light the broader issues of harassment and misconduct within sports organizations, urging universities to prioritize accountability and the safety of all students and staff members.
