In southern England, the opening of the Hindhead Tunnel in July 2011 marked a significant shift in the region's environmental landscape. The tunnel was constructed to alleviate traffic congestion on the A3, which had previously cut through Hindhead Common and the Devil's Punch Bowl, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This area is one of the largest remaining lowland heathlands in the South East, and the road's removal allowed for a remarkable rewilding initiative to take place. The National Trust, with the support of a long-term Countryside Stewardship agreement, undertook the task of restoring the natural contours of the land, replanting native species, and reconnecting habitats that had been disrupted for generations. This restoration effort was not only about improving the landscape but also about enhancing biodiversity in the area. As a result of these efforts, protected species such as woodlark and nightjar began to breed successfully on the restored heath. Matt Cusack, a National Trust Ranger, noted that the first nightjars were heard in August 2011, just a month after the tunnel's opening, indicating a rapid return of wildlife to the area. The project also had a positive impact on air quality in Hindhead village, which had been designated as an Air Quality Management Area due to high levels of nitrogen dioxide from traffic congestion. Within two years of the tunnel's opening, pollution levels fell below legal limits, leading to the lifting of this designation in 2015. The removal of the road noise allowed wildlife to thrive, re-establishing natural corridors that had been blocked for years. This successful rewilding project demonstrates the potential for infrastructure projects to have significant environmental benefits when designed with ecological considerations in mind.
