In recent years, there has been increased focus on the vulnerabilities in Bitcoin wallets created during a specific time frame. This particular issue concerns wallets generated with weak entropy between 2009 and 2012, a period when wallet software employed less secure methods for generating private keys. As a result, these weak keys are significantly easier to exploit, which raises concerns about the overall security of Bitcoin assets held in these wallets. The GPU distributed project, titled 'Before Quantum', aims to address this vulnerability by searching for such weak private keys. The project utilizes a CUDA-based framework that allows numerous GPU threads to execute cryptographic operations independently. The system targets specific weak patterns associated with historical vulnerabilities, such as the Debian OpenSSL bug that limited the possible keyspace to just 65,536 potential private keys. The project has been meticulous in defining the search parameters and methodology to ensure efficiency and accuracy in locating these weak private keys. Currently, the project's status reports a total of 23 weak key modes being examined. Most notably, the initial phases focused on smaller keyspaces, which have already been exhausted. The ongoing effort now involves scanning through a more complex set of inputs referred to as brain wallets, which expand to a keyspace of 2^64, targeting a thorough investigation against approximately 2,845 known funded addresses. The computational demand necessitates the use of CUDA-capable GPUs, with a clear emphasis on the raw CUDA core count to maximize efficiency during the cryptographic processing. Notably, even older GPU models like the GTX 1080 contribute meaningfully to this effort.
