Story

In an effort to retain users and compete with rival platforms like TikTok, Facebook is planning significant changes to its app. The company, which is based in the United States, announced that it will start testing a new 'reimagined experience' later this year. This new feature will allow a subset of users to access full-screen video content immediately upon opening the app. The decision comes after Facebook observed a growing trend where video content is becoming the primary medium for conversations, community building, and commerce. As a result, the platform is at risk of losing its user base to competitors that are more focused on video content. Facebook's parent company, Meta, has not disclosed specific user figures for its individual platforms, but it reported a collective loss of 20 million users in the first quarter of 2026. Despite still being the most popular social media platform globally, Facebook faces stiff competition from YouTube and TikTok, the latter of which has rapidly gained popularity, surpassing 1 billion monthly users just three years after its launch. In response to this competitive landscape, Meta previously launched Reels for Instagram in 2020 to better compete with TikTok, and now it is attempting to implement similar features on Facebook. The changes to Facebook's interface are part of a broader strategy to adapt to the evolving social media landscape. Tom Alison, Facebook's head, previously stated that he views TikTok as chasing Facebook rather than the other way around. However, the recent user decline indicates that Facebook may need to rethink its approach to maintain its relevance. The platform has also introduced other features, such as Seller, a dedicated app for Marketplace sellers, and Forum, which provides a space for users to interact with Facebook Groups, similar to subreddit communities on Reddit. In addition to these changes, Facebook is also modifying its user verification process. The platform now offers a free verified badge that can be obtained through a simple selfie verification process, aiming to help users identify real profiles. This move comes alongside the introduction of a paid subscription service, Meta Verified, which starts at $11.99 per month. These changes reflect Facebook's ongoing efforts to enhance user experience and engagement while navigating the challenges posed by competing platforms.
