Story

North Korea commenced its National Winter Games on February 6, 2026, at the Paektusan area sports village located in Samjiyon, a mountainous region close to the Chinese border. This event takes place as the North Korean athletes do not participate in the Winter Olympics set to begin in Milan Cortina due to their inability to secure qualification spots. The Games are organized by various sports clubs representing state bodies and industrial sites and feature over 50 events across five winter sports disciplines, including ice hockey, figure skating, and skiing. Interestingly, this marks North Korea's return to national sports activities after significant limitations imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The country's previous participation in the Winter Olympics occurred in PyeongChang, South Korea, in 2018, where they sent 22 athletes and utilized the occasion for a diplomatic engagement with South Korea. However, since then, North Korea's international sports participation has been heavily restricted, culminating in their suspension from the International Olympic Committee until the end of 2022, following their non-participation in the Tokyo Summer Olympics. North Korea's previous Winter Olympic achievements include a silver medal in women's speed skating during the 1964 Innsbruck Games and a bronze medal in short-track speed skating at the 1992 Albertville Games. Although there were hopes for North Korean pairs figure skating prospects recently, the duo failed to qualify in a final Olympic event last September in Beijing. The National Winter Games in Samjiyon highlight Kim Jong Un's ongoing projects aimed at promoting the area near Mount Paektu as a tourist destination, reinforcing its political significance. As North Korea looks towards the future, there is emerging interest regarding its participation in the 2026 Asian Games scheduled to take place in Japan next year. Despite existing sanctions that prohibit North Korean citizens from entry into Japan, North Korean officials expressed their intent to send a substantial delegation to partake in various events.
