In a significant development for the accountancy sector, BDO Ireland and BDO UK announced their merger, which will take effect at the start of their new financial year on July 4, 2026. This merger will create BDO LLP, a new entity with projected revenues of €1.26 billion and a workforce of approximately 8,500 employees, including around 500 partners. The combined organization will maintain operations in Limerick and Dublin, as well as 17 locations across the UK, and will be part of BDO Global's extensive international network, which spans 169 countries and territories.
The merger is seen as a strategic response to the evolving needs of clients and the accountancy profession, which is undergoing transformation due to technological advancements and changing client expectations. Mark Shaw, the UK managing partner of the new organization, emphasized the importance of creating greater scale and capability to meet these challenges. The merger aims to enhance the services offered in audit, tax, consulting, risk, and outsourcing, thereby providing clients with a wider range of expertise and resources.
In Ireland, the new entity will see a significant expansion, with the number of partners expected to double from 43 to 70 over the next five years. Brian McEnery will lead the Irish operations as the regional managing partner. He highlighted that the merger is built on a foundation of shared culture and mutual respect, which will benefit both clients and employees. Clients will gain access to a broader network of specialists, while employees will have increased opportunities for collaboration and professional development.
The merger reflects a long history of collaboration between BDO UK and BDO Ireland, particularly in cross-border client engagements and talent exchanges. As the accountancy landscape continues to evolve, this merger positions BDO LLP to better serve the entrepreneurial and ambitious mid-market, ensuring that they remain competitive and capable of meeting the demands of their clients in an increasingly complex business environment.
