A section of the M62 in Greater Manchester will be closed from 9pm on Friday until 6am on Monday to facilitate the dismantling of Castleton bridge, which is nearly 60 years old. This bridge is crucial for train services between Manchester and Rochdale, including freight transport to Drax power station. The closure is expected to impact around 120,000 daily drivers and disrupt travel plans for participants and spectators of the Great North Run, scheduled for Sunday. National Highways has been coordinating with Network Rail for several months to plan this significant work, which includes two full weekend closures. Motorists are advised to avoid the affected section and consider alternative routes, as the closures will lead to increased traffic congestion. The eastbound carriageway will be closed from Junction 18 to Junction 20, while the westbound will be shut from Junction 20 to Junction 19. In addition to the bridge replacement, routine maintenance will be conducted during the closures to minimize future disruptions. Drivers are encouraged to follow official diversions rather than relying on sat nav systems, which may not reflect the latest changes. Alternative trans-Pennine routes have been suggested, including the A69, A66, and various roads connecting Manchester and Sheffield. Rail services between Manchester Victoria and Rochdale will also be suspended until September 25, with rail replacement buses in operation. Passengers should expect significantly longer journey times and are advised to allow extra time for their travels throughout September due to these necessary infrastructure improvements.
