In November 2022, Amazon officially announced its subsea cable system called Fastnet, aimed at enhancing global internet connectivity. Recently, the Cork County Council granted permission for Amazon to construct a cable landing station at Tullyneasky West, situated approximately 6 kilometers from Owenahincha. This strategic development will link Ireland to Maryland in the United States, facilitating a more resilient pathway for internet traffic and supporting technological advancements in cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The undertaking is anticipated to commence in late 2026 and will take about a year to complete. The Fastnet cable system will significantly increase data capacity, boasting a design capability of over 320 terabits per second. This enhancement is particularly crucial for Amazon Web Services users, who rely on efficient data bandwidth for various applications including AI and cloud services. As part of the project, two existing structures on the site are set to be demolished to make room for the new landing station. Planning approval includes compliance with environmental conditions stipulated by the local council, ensuring that the development aligns with sustainable practices.
