Story

On December 9, 2025, NASA is closely observing the asteroid designated as 2025 XM, which is projected to pass within 295,000 miles of Earth. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has reported that this asteroid is traveling at a speed of 9,753 miles per hour and has an approximate diameter of 84 feet, making it comparable in size to a commercial airplane. This particular asteroid, despite its significant speed and proximity, does not qualify as a potentially hazardous object according to NASA's classifications. The agency defines a potentially hazardous object as one that exceeds 150 meters in diameter and comes within 4.6 million miles of Earth. Therefore, 2025 XM, although relatively close, falls short of this designation. This week also includes the approach of another asteroid, 2019 XN3, measuring 48 feet in diameter, which will pass by Earth at a distance of 1,360,000 miles on December 10, 2025. A larger asteroid, 1999 SF10, at 140 feet across, is set to pass at a much greater distance of approximately 1,950,000 miles on the same day. Collectively, these observations highlight NASA's continual efforts to track and monitor near-Earth objects, ensuring that any potential threats are flagged well in advance.
