Story
In the United States, millions of PlayStation users are set to benefit from a $7.85 million settlement agreement following a class-action lawsuit against Sony. The preliminary approval of this settlement was granted by a federal judge recently, stemming from allegations that Sony unlawfully limited competition in the digital game market. Since 2019, when Sony made the controversial decision to prohibit third-party retailers from selling game-specific digital download codes, consumers were essentially forced to purchase digital games exclusively through the PlayStation Store. The plaintiffs in this case argued that the termination of third-party sales created a monopoly-like situation that reduced market competition, leading to inflated prices for digital games. Notably, retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, and GameStop were affected by this decision. Users of PlayStation hardware have alleged that as a direct consequence of this decision, they faced increased costs for purchasing games, in violation of federal antitrust laws, although Sony has consistently denied any wrongdoing. Court documents estimate that around 4 million PlayStation users qualify to be part of the settlement class due to their purchases between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023. The settlement fund will be distributed to eligible users based on how many qualifying purchases they made during the specified period. Although individual payout amounts are yet to be finalized, it is expected that a significant portion, approximately 25%, will be allocated to attorneys' fees. For those eligible, payments will be made via credits deposited directly into their PlayStation wallet, contingent upon maintaining an active PlayStation Network account. Importantly, users wishing to retain the right to sue Sony independently have a deadline of July 2, 2026, to opt out. A final approval hearing for the settlement is anticipated later this year, which will cement the resolution of this ongoing legal dispute.
