Story

In recent years, China has made significant strides in artificial intelligence, making substantial progress in areas such as AI bot performance, overall research activities, and industrial robot installations. According to Stanford University’s Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) 2026 AI Index report, the gap in performance between the top AI models in China and the U.S. has narrowed, with the difference in Arena scores decreasing significantly from around 300 points in 2023 to just 39 points in 2026. As of now, the top U.S. model, Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6, leads China’s Dola-Seed 2.0 by merely 2.7 percent. Additionally, China has surpassed the U.S. in the number of citations for AI publications, achieving 20.6% of global citations in 2024, compared to the U.S.'s 12.6%. Their dominance extends to the realm of industrial robots as well, with China boasting over 295,000 robots installed, which is nearly nine times more than the 34,200 installations in the U.S. These developments indicate a change in the narrative, as China emerges as a serious competitor in the global AI landscape despite its relatively lower levels of private investment in AI, which total $12.4 billion compared to the U.S.'s $286 billion investment in 2025. This shift raises concerns about the future of AI talent in America, as the influx of tech experts into the country is experiencing a dramatic slowdown. Experts warn that this could lead to a deterioration of U.S. technological leadership, as China continues to build a robust and homegrown talent pool in the AI sector, highlighted by the success of initiatives such as DeepSeek. Hence, the landscape of AI technology appears to be evolving towards a more competitive environment, with China gaining ground rapidly in multiple dimensions of this technology battle.
