Story
In Singapore, Cold Storage is set to take over the convenience retail operations previously managed by FairPrice Group at Esso petrol stations. On March 5, 2026, Aster Mobility Solutions 1 announced this new partnership with Cold Storage, marking a significant shift in the convenience retail landscape at fuel stations. This transition is part of a broader reorganization following the acquisition of both Esso stations and Cold Storage's operations by new owners, as Esso and Cold Storage found new management groups by late 2025. The Aster Mobility Solutions 1, a subsidiary of Indonesia's Chandra Asri Group, acquired ExxonMobil's network of 60 petrol stations in Singapore during the same period. Meanwhile, Malaysian retail group Macrovalue took ownership of all Cold Storage and Giant supermarkets in Singapore earlier in 2025. This restructuring underscores the evolving nature of retail operations within fuel service areas, as companies look for ways to enhance customer experience and optimize the convenience environment. Under this arrangement, Cold Storage plans to introduce a refreshed convenience retail concept at Esso stations, aiming to provide a carefully curated selection of everyday essentials and fresh ready-to-eat offerings. This new direction is designed to cater to customers on the move, enhancing the shopping experience while they refuel. Cold Storage's managing director, Lim Boon Cheong, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating it enables the supermarket chain to deliver quality and convenient offerings in a unique setting. Andre Khor, deputy chief executive of Aster, noted the initiative's potential to transform traditional service stations beyond just fuel stops, extending their roles into spaces that enhance daily life quality by providing convenience and connection. This overarching vision reflects a trend in retail where customer service and experience are paramount, redefining expectations from standard petrol station operations and aiming to enrich the daily lives of everyday consumers.
